Jim Armstrong is a New York State licensed professional engineer with a uniquely diverse energy industry background, including 15 years of experience in “real time” operation of the Con Edison energy transmission and distribution. This provided him with in-depth knowledge and experience in real time NYISO electric markets and the underlying operation of transmission and generation systems upon which the markets are based.

Since joining DSMEA in 2005, he has provided diverse clients with comprehensive engineering consultation in the assessment, design, and implementation of energy projects including over 20 small (less than 1 MW) cogeneration installations. Projects have been carried out for multi-family residential facilities, commercial office facilities, and commercial/industrial facilities, and one World War II aircraft carrier. His experience in the bulk power/energy systems at the Con Ed Control Center lead to the innovation/development of the small, cost effective systems used in Tru-Use™ energy load profiling as a critical element in accurate facility assessment and project development.
Jim's innovative and pioneering solutions for energy systems and monitoring were recognized by the Association of Energy Engineers in May of 2015 when he was awarded Energy Engineer of the Year by the New York regional chapter. He was most notably recognized for his design of the trigeneration system installed at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, as well as for implementation of his CoolArray™ system at Pier A Harbor House and for his development of the Tru-Use™ energy monitoring solution.
